What is a Porch? A place for intimate gatherings? A space mediating the interior and the exterior? A bridge between the private domain and that of the broader community? It could be said that the Porch is an “apparatus” for “slowing things down”; enabling the “crystallization” of many social forms within a more temporal field. If we take a broader view, this simple building element can be seen as an allegory for the many roles that architecture plays in facilitating and making visible the almost infinite variety of human relationships. As architects, we need to ask ourselves how this not so simple concept of the “porch” can support and extend a broader social agenda?
“The Porch”
In response to this beautiful challenge, we respectfully referenced the card structures of Charles and Ray Eames and Enzo Mari—design thinkers with profound social reach. The repetitive and crystalline qualities of these card structures inspired our thinking about recurring, but always changing, social forms like the porch, manifested through a variety of urban and architectural conditions throughout the seasons. Now more than ever, we need to continue to imagine and create spaces that support stronger and more welcoming communities.

Che cos'è un portico? Un luogo per incontri intimi? Uno spazio che media l'interno e l'esterno? Un ponte tra l'ambito privato e la comunità più ampia? Si potrebbe dire che il portico è un "apparato" per "rallentare le cose" che permette la "cristallizzazione" di molte forme sociali all'interno del campo temporale. In una prospettiva più ampia, questo semplice elemento costruttivo può essere visto come un'allegoria dei molti ruoli che l'architettura svolge nel facilitare e rendere visibile la varietà quasi infinita delle relazioni umane. Come architetti, ci chiediamo come questo concetto non così semplice di "portico" possa sostenere ed estendere un'agenda sociale più ampia.

In risposta a questa bella sfida, ci siamo riferiti con rispetto alle strutture architettoniche di Charles e Ray Eames e di Enzo Mari, pensatori del design con una profonda portata sociale. Le qualità ripetitive e cristalline di questi assemblaggi quasi urbani hanno ispirato il nostro pensiero. Le forme sociali ricorrenti, ma sempre mutevoli, come il portico, possono manifestarsi durante le stagioni in una varietà di condizioni. Dobbiamo continuare a immaginare e creare spazi che sostengano comunità più forti e accoglienti, ora più che mai.
