What is the role of the urban porch? Is it possible for an urban porch to provide qualities of prospect and refuge typically found in residential architecture?
The MarketFront Porch situated in the historic Pike Place Market in Seattle offers answers to these questions. Uniquely perched above Elliott Bay with panoramic views of the Olympic Range, MarketFront embraces its urban relationship to create dynamic public space that elevates the human experience. At the civic scale, with 10-15 million visitors per year, the MarketFront Porch mediates between the density of downtown and Seattle’s thriving waterfront. At the ecological scale, the project occupies a rich ecotone between a large waterfront city and Puget Sound with the wilderness of the Olympic Mountain range beyond. As a multivalent public space, the porch functions as both a destination (refuge) within the city and as portal (prospect) to the natural environment of the Bay . Forming the upper terminus of a new accessible pathway between downtown and the waterfront below, the porch is both a visual landmark and common gathering place for locals and tourists. With its prominent siting and open, welcoming structure the MarketFront is truly Seattle’s front porch.
