The Civic PORCH at Gateway Arch National Park reconnects the city to its riverfront on the Mississippi River to fully realize the potential of a democratic public landscape located at the base of Eero Saarinen’s Gateway Arch.
Orchestrated by a series of bold infrastructural transformations, including a new land bridge spanning the highway, the Park is reintegrated into its context by linking St. Louis’s Gateway Mall to the Mississippi River. The transformations additionally allowed for greater accessibility to the riverfront via trails and bikeways while offering the opportunity to create a new front door to the monument, the Civic PORCH.
The Civic PORCH is defined by an arc of sky floating upon the landscape, its reflective presence extends the distant rivers glistening surface towards us, merging water, earth and sky. This Civic PORCH is a dynamic composite of its surroundings, an emphatic statement of collective welcome as we circulate along the generous radial paths, slipping subtly beneath landscape. It is a place of gathering, discussion and active interchange, while at the center point, wrapped within our embracing movement, resides a unique place, a ‘circle of gathering’, a place of repose, conversation, contemplation and equanimity.
Il Civic PORCH del Gateway Arch National Park ricollega la città al suo lungofiume sul fiume Mississippi per realizzare pienamente il potenziale di un paesaggio pubblico democratico situato alla base del Gateway Arch di Eero Saarinen.
Grazie a una serie di audaci trasformazioni infrastrutturali, tra cui un nuovo ponte terrestre che attraversa l'autostrada, il parco è stato reintegrato nel suo contesto, collegando il Gateway Mall di St. Louis al fiume Mississippi.
