One might least expect to encounter a porch at a construction site, never mind in the middle of LA’s Wilshire Blvd, where the continuity of a street wall is gospel to the urban planner. But then one encounters the surprise of a scaffolded wall draped in construction textile curiously upturned into a lacey canopy overhead, inviting passersby into a courtyard. Construction is often an exclusionary act, the culmination of designing and building behind closed doors and walls. Construction is also ultimately temporary, but the aesthetics and associations of construction are ubiquitous in a city that is constantly building and rebuilding.
It is strange revisiting this project at a moment when LA is again in crisis, engulfed in flames. During the summer of ‘21, it was the tail end of another crisis of the public after years of sheltering-in-place. Veil Craft, a temporary architectural installation that summer, was an attempt to reimagine a spirit of gathering and inclusivity. The project brings forth and challenges the everyday, invisible materiality of LA’s relationship with accessibility, labor practices, community, and craft invariably linked to the act of building.
As LA heals, we will surely see scenes of scaffolding in neighborhoods engaged in rebuilding. What if this time, the porch appears—temporary maybe, but nonetheless a place for a moment of respite, a gesture of care and sharing. Veil Craft’s most generous gesture may perhaps be the bending open of that street wall to say: c’mon in. It’s gonna take a village to rebuild, after all.
Non ci si aspetterebbe mai di incontrare un portico in un cantiere, tanto meno nel bel mezzo di Wilshire Blvd a Los Angeles, dove la continuità di un muro stradale è un vangelo per l'urbanista. Ma poi ci si imbatte nella sorpresa di un muro con impalcature e tessuto da costruzione curiosamente rovesciato in una tettoia di pizzo, che invita i passanti a entrare in un cortile. La costruzione è spesso un atto di esclusione, il culmine della progettazione e della costruzione dietro porte e muri chiusi. La costruzione è anche temporanea, ma l'estetica e le associazioni della costruzione sono onnipresenti in una città che costruisce e ricostruisce continuamente.
È strano rivisitare questo progetto in un momento in cui Los Angeles è di nuovo in crisi, sommersa dalle fiamme. Nell'estate del '21, era la coda di un'altra crisi del pubblico, dopo anni di rifugio sul posto. Veil Craft, un'installazione architettonica temporanea realizzata quell'estate, era un tentativo di reimmaginare uno spirito di aggregazione e inclusione. Il progetto mette in luce e sfida la materialità quotidiana e invisibile del rapporto di Los Angeles con l'accessibilità, le pratiche di lavoro, la comunità e l'artigianato sempre legati all'atto di costruire.
Mentre Los Angeles guarisce, vedremo sicuramente scene di impalcature nei quartieri impegnati nella ricostruzione. E se questa volta apparisse il portico, forse temporaneo, ma comunque un luogo per un momento di tregua, un gesto di cura e condivisione. Il gesto più generoso di Veil Craft potrebbe essere quello di piegare il muro della strada per dire: "Entrate". Dopotutto, ci vorrà un villaggio per ricostruire.
